HMS celebrates the 10th anniversary of TimeControl Online!
Montreal, August 16, 2021 - HMS Software, the publisher of TimeControl, the world's most flexible multi-function timesheet system is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its SaaS model of TimeControl. In August of 2011, HMS launched TimeControl Online, a Software as a Service subscription model of the popular TimeControl timesheet system. TimeControl has been available in the industry as an on-premise product since 1984.
“Ten years in the Software as a Service industry makes our TimeControl Online product an early entrant in enterprise solutions,” says Chris Vandersluis, President of HMS Software. “We were able to leverage code that was already built for service delivery into a subscription offering that eliminated the need for our clients to maintain servers, databases and internal technical staff to keep the application running and stable. When we took over that role in the TimeControl Online service, clients were able to focus on just getting as much as they could from the application instead of making sure the underlying hardware and infrastructure was working.”
The launch of a Software as a Service model wasn’t without effort. HMS had to displace some on-premise only functionality with functionality that would work in the Cloud. That included writing a bi-directional API for integration and ensuring that the free TimeControl Mobile App would be able to securely link with both on-premise deployments and the TimeControl Online service.
The TimeControl Online Service also had to pass numerous security standards, some of which HMS had to invent.
“Our TimeControl system is often used as an auditable source of our client’s internal financial systems,” explains Mark Corbin, a senior developer and analyst at HMS. “It was imperative that in making TimeControl available as a hosted service in the Cloud, that we could meet or exceed the same standards our clients would have deploying on-premise.”
HMS Software has been able to leverage the already extensive security options available in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 environment. When coupled with the security model that has evolved within TimeControl since its inception, a secure and powerful system was the result.
System security was only one corner of the new system. System stability was another.
“We’re proud of the stability of TimeControl Online,” says Stephen Eyton-Jones, HMS Software’s Director of Technical Services. Since it’s launch, TimeControl Online has enjoyed an up-time of better than 99.9%. We monitor it 24x7 and have happily had very, very few service interruptions.”
TimeControl Online had to contend with the big expectations of existing and prospective clients who know of TimeControl because of its tremendous flexibility and its multi-purpose integrations with Project Management, Finance and other corporate systems.
“When we designed TimeControl Online, we made a conscious decision that TimeControl Online and TimeControl for on-premise would share an identical code-base,” explains Eyton-Jones. “That means that the software source code for the online version and the onpremise version are exactly the same. This has been a tremendous benefit because when we invent or enhance a feature or if we fix something in the product, it is immediately fixed both online and available to clients on-premise. That has made a huge impact on our ability to provide stability but also technical support services.”
TimeControl is already known as the most integrated and flexible timesheet in the industry. It comes with numerous methods of integration both to on-premise systems and on-line systems and includes out-of-the-box integration to Project Management tools like Microsoft Project, Primavera, Brightwork, ARES PRISM, InEight, JIRA and Deltek EPM and configurable integration for finance systems like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics and others. These integrations are included in both the on-premise version and TimeControl Online.
